Stategic Realignment of Maritime Alliances in 2025 : HAPAG Joins MAERSK to Form “The Gemini Cooperation”

Maritime alliances play a crucial role in the shipping industry, bringing together multiple carriers to optimize their operations on key trade routes worldwide. These cooperation agreements allow members to combine their strengths to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and provide broader coverage to their customers.

In 2025, the landscape of maritime alliances will undergo a significant transformation. HAPAG, one of the major players in the industry, has announced its departure from “THE Alliance,” to which it has been affiliated until now. This separation will take effect in January 2025, marking the end of a strategic collaboration spanning several years.

As part of a strategic repositioning, HAPAG will partner with MAERSK, another leading figure in maritime transport, to create a new alliance: “The Gemini Cooperation.” This new entity will be established in February 2025 and is set to redefine the dynamics of global maritime transport. The objective of “The Gemini Cooperation” will be to enhance the competitiveness of its members on key trade routes while offering greater flexibility and optimized services to their respective clients.

This realignment of alliances reflects current industry trends, where players are continuously seeking to adapt to an increasingly complex and competitive environment. The formation of “The Gemini Cooperation” is seen as a strategic response to emerging industry challenges, particularly in sustainability, digitalization, and operational efficiency.

Cargo on the sea Incoterm FCA

The EXW 2020 incoterm is considered unsuitable for international trade, as it poses 2 major questions:

  • The seller must recover the EXA in the outbound ECS, which corresponds to the customs declaration to justify the sale before tax. This is not always easy without a privileged relationship with the customs declarant
  • The EXW incoterm does not reflect the logistical reality in France. The FCA incoterm clarifies the transfer of responsibility and remedies this shortcoming by clearly indicating that the seller is responsible for loading his goods.

Do you sell FCA? Did you know that you can choose your customs declarant?
